Santuari de la Mare de Déu de la Font-Santa

We find it side to side with the Castell de Subirats, in a place with a privilaged view.

The oldest documentation on it dates back to a testament of the year 1030, in which there is a legacy of wealth to Sant Pere de Subirats.

In 1936 it was fully seized and the images and objects of cult existing in the parrish of Sant Pere were destroyed, so its valuable content accumulated by the parrish through the centuries had disappeared.

The place has become the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de la Font Santa, very known by the people of the region and frequently visited by foreigners.

The temple has a rectangular ground plan, with an interiorly semicircular apse, half dug in the rock, not visible from the outside. The entrance door is facing westl. Fully surrounded by outbuildings iniciated in the eighteenth century and beginnings of the nineteenth, fully covered by two-slope roof and Arabian tiles.

The apse is a very rudimentary construction with a viewing little window, very simple in the middle, and a niche of half-point arch. It is the oldest part of the present temple, it might date back until the first half of the eleventh century.

The block has a Romanic style, but late, with a “canó” ceiling quite sharp, with two toral archs also quite sharp, the one at the noth side with the two “impostes” easily worked. At each side of the side walls shaping half-point archs appear, a little sharp, which face the western side or the door; facing east, which was built in the seventeenth century to host the Mare de Déiu del Roser, it has a nerved half-turn with key, of a barroc style. Nowadays, the Mare de Déu de la Font Santa or de Subirats is venerated. This image was relatively modern and it was burn in 1936. The present one is a reproduction of the former one. The whole temple is built with no-smooth stones; the archs are made with great very-well-cut stones, as some corners of the building. At the south part, near the top of the church, there is the “cadireta” bell tower, of two openings, partitioned, all of stone. The side walls with the shaping archs look like they were build in the eleventh century or beginnings of the twelveth, the roof and the rest of the building were built in tñhe thirteenth century. It was restored between the years 1972-1974 and it ended up in a quite acceptable state. All the added parts which can be seen around the church are recent, both at the grave cave and at the place where there was the old rectorship, of which original elements are still conserved. The same can be said of the term cross and images of the church. The whole has ended up being very hospitable and one can enjoy a splendid panoramic view. The Verge de la Font Santa The chuch of Sant Pere of the Castell de Subirats is as old as the Castle itself. The Verge de la Font Santa is venerated in this parrish and it gives name to the fountain that we find at the back side of the of the building of the parrish. The Verge de la Font Santa has always been venerated, not only by the parishes of the region of Subirats, but also by the region of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and the region of the Penedès. The tradition tells that the Verge was found in one of the deep valleys which rurround the Castle, at the foot of the Pujol d’En Figueres, near the Font del Clot, terminal and intermittent. It seems it was hidden there to protect it from the sacking during the the invasion of the Sarrains.
